Refrigerant dehumidifier

What is a compressor dehumidifier?

A compressor dehumidifier is the most economical dryer that uses a condensation process for dehumidification to remove moisture from the air. Thus, it helps to avoid mold, fungus, and odor. This household appliance is in coastal sea cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

A compressor air dehumidifier draws humid air through a fan and passes it over a series of cold coils. It consists of evaporator and condenser coils. The coils cool the air to reduce its temperature below its dew point.

When the air gets cool to dew point temperature, moisture in it starts condensing into the water over the coil's surface. The water droplets then collect in a collection tray or reservoir, which can be emptied periodically.

This condensation removes moisture from the air, and dry air gets discharged into the room. Hence, it reduces the overall humidity level in a room or space.

By doing so, compressor type dehumidifiers can prevent the growth of mold and mildew, eliminate musty odors, protect furniture and belongings from excess moisture, and even lower energy bills by reducing the workload on air conditioning units...

Different types of compressor dehumidifiers, including portable and duct mount units, are available in the market. Mobile units are cheaper, have limited capacity, and are designed for small spaces. For large areas, use a ducted type system for uniform dehumidification. a

The only limitation of compressor-based dehumidifiers is that they cannot do dehumidification efficiently in cold conditions. In the following sections, let us explore the benefits and process of selecting the right compressor-based dehumidifier.

We will also discuss installing and using them and their maintenance and care.

Advantages of compressor type dehumidifier.

Condensation dehumidifier
  • Compressor dehumidifiers are highly effective in removing high moisture levels from the air.

  • It is the most cost-effective dehumidification solution, especially for vast places like warehouses, indoor swimming pools, and factories.

  • The working humidity and temperature range of this type of system is wide. It can work efficiently when the room temperature exceeds 18 deg C.

  • They are powerful and can quickly dehumidify large spaces. It can be designed with very high airflow without much increase in its price.

  • A dehumidifier with a compressor is available in various capacities that suit the application and budget of the client...

  • These units require less power than a desiccant-type unit, especially at high humidity levels.

  • They produce a low level of noise when in operation.

  • They require minimal maintenance over time.

  • The best compressor dehumidifiers are available in portable, ducted, floor-mount, and wall-mount units to fit various needs.

Refrigerant dehumidifier features.

A compressor dehumidifier reduces humidity in the air using a refrigerant and fan. It should have a humidistat and water tank with a transparent window for optimal performance.

A drain hose connection, washable or replaceable Filter, defrost function, timer, fan speed control, and clear display will add more value...

These features enable you to set the desired humidity level, collect condensed water, direct water to a sink, trap dust and allergens, prevent ice formation, save energy, adjust fan speed, and monitor device information.

A compressor dehumidifier should have the following features:

Compressor based dehumidifier
Compressor delay protection.
The unit should have this feature to make the compressor off for a few minutes before restarting to avoid damage.
Humidistat control.
A humidistat that allows you to set the desired humidity level and automatically turns the device on and off to maintain it.
Water tank full.
A portable compressor dehumidifier should automatically switch off with tank full indication when the internal tanks get full to avoid overflow of the condensate.
Drain hose with pump.
A drain hose connection enables continuous condensate disposal and is helpful for highly humid areas. If it has a pump, then it will be an added advantage.
Automatic defrost.
Defrost function that prevents ice from forming on the coils when the temperature is low. This function improves efficiency and avoids the overload of dehumidifiers.
Fan speed control.
A air compressor dehumidifier should have a fan speed control that lets you adjust the fan's speed according to your preference and noise tolerance.
Controller.
The controller should display the current humidity, temperature, fan speed, & timer setting. The display should be easy to read and operate.
Filter.
A refrigerant dehumidifier ensure clean air and keep compress and coils clean by restricting dust with the help of a filter at its air inlet. It improves the performance of the machine.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some possible reasons:

  • Compressor dehumidifiers do not use power-consuming electrical heaters to dry the air like other units. Hence, they use less electricity to remove the same amount of moisture from the air.

  • Refrigerant dehumidifiers' heat dissipation is much less than a desiccant room dehumidification system. Thus, it does not increase room temperature and load on your air conditioner.

  • It can handle larger volumes of air and moisture than desiccant or electric dryers. They are suitable for larger spaces and more severe humidity problems.

  • These systems are more durable and reliable than desiccant or electronic dehumidifiers. They have fewer moving parts and less risk of malfunctioning or breaking down.

This system is constructed using an evaporator coil, a condenser coil, a compressor, and the control circuit. Refrigerant dehumidifiers draw humid air through a fan and pass it over cold coils.

The refrigerant cycle, with the help of a compressor and coils, cools moist air below the dew point, where the moisture content of the air condenses into the water. The water droplets then collect in a collection tray or reservoir, which can be emptied periodically.

No, a compressor-based dehumidifier does not cool the room. It may lower the temperature by reducing the air's latent heat, the energy required to evaporate water. The humid air passes through a cold evaporator coil, condensing into water droplets collected in a tank or drained away.

The dry air then goes through a warm condenser coil, which is reheated and released back into the room.

But it can't be used to cool the room. When we run a dehumidification system, we feel comfortable due to a less humid climate, which reduces the sensation of stickiness and sweating.

Please note that compressor dehumidifiers work on the condensation principle. It performs best in a warm and humid climate since the refrigerant can quickly reach a temperature lower than the dew point of the room air.

During the winter, the room air is already freezing. Hence, the refrigerant might not be cool enough to condense moisture into the water. On the other hand, ice can form on the unit's coils, and condensation will stop.

Thus, using a refrigerant dehumidifier is not recommended during the winter or in any place like cold storage rooms.

It is crucial to choose a compressor dehumidifier that has the following safety features:

  • Compressors should be protected from sudden on and off. Thus, the unit should have a delay timer for the restart of the compressor.

  • The unit should be equipped with a temperature sensor to offer overtemperature protection to the compressor.

  • A humidistat automatically shuts off the device when the desired humidity level is reached.

  • A frost sensor that prevents ice buildup on the evaporator coils and ensures efficient operation in low temperatures.

  • A water tank with a transparent window and a full indicator that alerts the user when it needs to be emptied.

  • A drain hose connection that allows continuous drainage of the collected water to a nearby sink or drain.

  • A filter that traps dust and allergens and can be easily cleaned or replaced.

  • A cord wrap that prevents tripping hazards and protects the power cord from damage.

  • A carry handle and casters that make it easy to move the device from one room to another.
